Bringing Women In: An Update, 1974-1984

By Rela Geffen Monson

American Jewish Committee (AJC), February 1986

In the fall of 1975, a survey of the role of women in the organizational life of the Jewish community of Philadelphia was undertaken by the Committee on the Role of Women of the American Jewish Committee. There was an impressionistic feeling within the group that the potential "womanpower" of the community was not being fully utilized. Since no "hard" data were available to substantiate or negate this feeling, this survey was seen as a means to remedy the lack of information. Certain basic descriptive data were ascertained relating to the proportion of women on boards, their roles on boards and attempts to recruit women to boards.
