Preface

By David Mittelberg

Tel Aviv University, 2011

This is an introduction written by the author for Erik Cohen's book The Educational Shaliach, in which he describes the innovative aspects of Cohen's analysis of the role of the shaliach - the Israeli representative in Diaspora Jewish communities. While the Jewish Agency for Israel has been undergoing systematic changes that include thinking of Israel and the Diaspora as being in mutual partnership, it is the author's opinion that these changes have not been expressed in the current model of the shlichut, and that a new paradigm must be quickly implemented.
