As we approach the 21st century, perhaps the greatest challenge facing New York City is implementation of plans for city government, together with private industry and voluntary sector, to meet the needs of its citizens by providing essential and adequate services. The deterioration of the public education and transportation systems were easily predictable, but the solutions are more complex in today's society. To meet these problems, Mayor Koch formed the New York City Commission on the Year 2000 to study and develop goals for the city into the next century. The New York Chapter of the American Jewish Committee believes that the basic issue of how best to resolve New York's problems is also the responsibility of civic voluntary organizations. To that end, the Chapter sponsored a series of breakfast meetings with government officials, academics and civic leaders, who shared their views on how to create and implement a plan for New York's future. These papers review the approaches of the individual speakers to the problems confronting New York and suggest some preliminary conclusions regarding the role of organizations such as the American Jewish Committee in meeting the challenges, obstacles and goals of New York City in the year 2000. The presentations were prepared from transcripts of tapes of the meeting.
