Jewish Grandparenting and the Intergenerational Connection: Summary of Proceedings

By Charlotte Holstein, Harlan Wechsler, Arthur Kornhaber, Abram Monk, Janet Sainer, David Morris

American Jewish Committee (AJC), November 1984

Aware of the importance of grandparenting as a link to the Jewish past and also as a factor in the Jewish identity formation of their grandchildren, the AJC organized a scholarly conference (with the National Institute for Families) in November 1983. The research and findings presented at that conference made it clear that increased longevity had made grandparenting a mass experience with special implications for a Jewish community that is aging. Moving beyond theory and research, the Center organized a conference on Jewish Grandparenting and the Family Connection to address the practical implications of the earlier discussion from the perspectives of Jewish professionals including rabbis, educators, social workers, psychologists, and gerontologists, as well as those most immediately concerned: grandparents and grandchildren. It is our hope that the papers and discussions summarized in these proceedings will help sensitize the American Jewish community to the vital importance of the intergenerational connection and lead to the establishment of a communal network for sharing ideas and programs that will benefit grandparents, parents and grandchildren.
