An Important Contribution

By Menachem Kaufman

World Zionist Organization (WZO), Summer 1985

This is an in-depth review of America's Jews in Transition (1983) by Chaim I. Waxman. Waxman's volume surveys the growth and development of American Jewry from its earliest days to the present, however, the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century receive only scant treatment. The author is not oblivious to early American Jewry, but his interest is focused on the century that began in 1880.
