This thesis examines reasons why women join membership organizations like National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles (NCJW/LA) and Hadassah Southern California (HSC). Some of the questions examined include: What is the role of women’s Jewish membership organizations in the Jewish community? How is involvement and membership in these organizations reflective of the individual’s commitment to their Judaism and the larger Jewish community? What is the changing role of membership in Jewish women’s organizations? What are the benefits of membership in these organizations to the organization and to the individual? To understand members’ attraction to these organizations, 17 interviews were conducted with professional staff and lay leaders. Observational data was also collected at events sponsored by NCJW/LA and HSC.
