By Jim Schwartz, Jeffrey Scheckner

American Jewish Committee (AJC), Jewish Publication Society (JPS), 2000

Based on local community counts, the estimated size of the American Jewish community in 1999 was approximately 6 million. Varying definitions of "Jewish," diverse sample sources and time cause discrepancies in national and local estimates. This article contains local population estimates provided by knowledgeable local informants, and these serve as the basis for calculations of state and regional population counts.
