Ma'yan Journey - Fall 1998

By Sally Gottesman, Ruth Abusch-Magder, Margot Meitner

Ma'yan, Fall 1998

This issue of Journey examines the process of moving forward and making change for women in the Jewish community with a particular focus on the High Holidays, tzedakah and questions raised during Shabbat. The first section, "Moving Forward: The Jewish Year" discusses reflection and return. Ruth Abusch-Magder writes about women's expression through culinary means in "Culinary Prayer." In the second section, "Tzedakah: Looking Forward, Giving Back," Sally Gottesman explains how she devotes her time and resources to Jewish organizations in hopes of fostering change that is beneficial to women. The article "This is the Bread" focuses on charity, seders, and women's body image, promoting eating disorder awareness. The third section, "Ma'yan Programs: Looking Back, Moving Forward" includes a Report on Ma'yan Shabbaton - community, ritual and rest - and provides ideas for new Shabbat customs. Margot Meitner writes on the biblical figure, Sarah, and how theatrical experience changes the way she is perceived and understood.
