By Tamara Cohen, Erika Katske, Susan Sapiro, Gila Gevirtz, Diane P. Burhenne

Ma'yan, Winter 1998

The women of Chanukkah are the focus of this issue, especially in terms of gift-giving and money. The section "Beyond the Maccabees" features an article by editor Tamara Cohen on "Chanukkah Heroines" - Chana and Judith. Susan Sapiro writes about Emma Lazarus, poet, author, and activist, who developed her Jewish identity through her writing in 19th century America. This issue's "Changemaker Profile" features Gila Gevirtz, who writes about the spiritual nature of tzedakah. Gevirtz's feature is followed by an article by Diane P. Burhenne on teaching children about having and giving. Erika Katske writes about the power of money and the necessity of money and power in the process of change.
