In June of 1967, Israel's victory in the Six Day War seemed a miracle, a fulfillment of Israel's vision and meaning straight out of a dream. 40 years later, that dream seems a nightmare. The settlements of the West Bank and Golan present a powder-keg of religious, messianic, and nationalistic sentiment to Israelis, and a threat and humiliation to the Palestinians, compounding their degradation and anger.
