In Berlin, Where the Past Is Present

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2008

Berlin's insistence on memory, on its candid, almost naked confrontation with its own recent past and its own responsibility for that past, brings many to the city. There is no other place in the world where yesterday's horrors are so deliberately rendered unavoidable. It is not the photographs of Hitler and Goering and Goebbels that moisten the eyes, but the photos of the nameless, the humiliated nameless, the murdered nameless - may the memories of all be blessed.
