The flap over the merits of Ambassador Charles Freeman's appointment as chair of the government's National Intelligence Committee tells us a great deal about the difficulty of conducting a calm and thoughtful conversation about the Middle East. While Freeman's thoughts on Israel may have been naively expressed, the vitriol with which he was driven out was disgraceful. At a time when Israel desperately needs honest advice, all they get is the pandering of the ideologues who sabotaged Freeman
