The arrest of Rabbi Saul Kassin, head of the Syrian Jewish community in America, gives an opportunity to examine the sometimes illustrious, sometimes notorious family tree of the Kassin rabbinic dynasty, one of the oldest on record. For 500 years, from the Spanish Inquisition to modern Brooklyn, and through a twisting route of world Jewry, the Kassin Rabbis have lead and taught and been a part of the ups and downs of the community of Syrian Jews.
