Behind the Biden Flap

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2010

In the early days of the state of Israel, many on the left were "reluctant Zionists," who knew the risks of nationalism but who believed that the Jews could pull it off, that the challenge that lay before the state was to demonstrate what "benign nationalism" might mean - a Jewish state not as the culmination of Jewish history but as a vessel for the ongoing exploration of Jewish values and capacities. Sixty years later, it is clear that "benign nationalism" has failed. Hijacked by settlers and the ultra-orthodox, Israeli nationalism thumbs its nose at liberalism happily embraces authoritarian repression.
