Shared Values

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2010

A new book by Harvard Professor Eric Nelson proposes that much of Europe's political socialism and property redistribution has its roots in Christian exegesis of classical Hebrew texts. This conclusion will shock and outrage some, and be embraced wholeheartedly by others. But there is a critical lesson to be learned here, not from the substance of the theory, but rather the roll of debate and open-minded discussion when the topic is "Jewish values." Whether or not one agrees, the lesson is to keep each other thorough, honest and appropriately modest in the intellectual journey.
