Protest Movement Offers Hope for Israel's Future

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2011

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis take to the streets, mirroring protests in Cairo and Tunis and New York, perhaps heralding the beginning of a third chapter in Israel's history as an independent state. This chapter moves away from the privatization and nationalism of the last 35 years to an Israel more concerned with social justice, less ossified against peace and liberalism. It will have to move beyond demonstrations and into Israel's tangled political web, while preserving the enthusiasm and the hopefulness that characterize it today. But a nearly empty glass is suddenly half-full.
