What do we choose to remember?

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 1995

The story of the creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum tells its own story, but also a larger one - In the Holocaust, as in the greater arc of history - which of the infinite details are included, and which omitted? Each decision is an attempt at a truth while knowing all along that there is no Truth, there are only the particular stories we choose to tell, the stories that effectively take the place of history.
