The Book of Virtues

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 1995

The current battle over gangsta rap and ultra-violent movie imagery, the fight between censorship and free speech, misses the point entirely. Those on the left are correct, government censorship in the arts and media is always wrong - but those on the right have a point as well, that this is violence and depravity masquerading as artistic dialogue for the veneer of protection. So what is the proper course of action? The people - not the government - must understand the need for the community to protect its own civil society and appeal to the decency of the artists, and failing that, boycott. Citizens can disapprove of the message while still abhorring the idea of government censors.
