The Status Quo: Everyone Dissatisfied

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 1997

The Status Quo agreement between the Israeli government and Orthodox Judaism was an attempt in the 1940s to protect what seemed likely to disappear entirely. The military waivers and role of the Orthodox Rabbinate in the definition of Jewishness that made sense then, seem like an anachronism now, and are hugely resented by the rest of democratic Israel. And they indicate a polity in deep trouble. This draft version is archived as part of Leonard Fein's complete papers.
