The Dynamics of Jewish Identity

By Leivy Smolar

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), March 1980

The author examines the historical development of Jewish self-conception, from an all-encompassing national identity to modern conceptions such as a religious or ethnic sub-group within wider non-Jewish milieus. He advocates a revitalization of the original conception of the Jewish people as an Am, a nation. In Journal of Jewish Communal Service, v.56 no.3, Spring 1980.
