The Future of Judaism or the Judaism of the Future: About the Jewish Values

By Alan Hoffman

JDC International Centre for Community Development, January 10, 2002

Alan Hoffman, Director-General of the Jewish Agency's Education Department discusses the development of Jewish values in conjunction with the modern world. The author addresses Jewish education, asserting that Jewish educators face a dilemma in which they must learn how to teach Judaism in a way that fits the needs of students and their modern environment. He asserts that the best way to develop Jewish education is by exposing Judaism to modern thought and comparing it to modern philosophy. He also discusses the importance of grammar in the teaching of Jewish texts, and then analyzes the significance of teaching the newest generation the history, values, and politics behind the development of Israel.
