The Discontinuity of Generations: Consensus of Group Discussions

By Bertram H. Gold

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Fall 1961

Jewish communal workers at the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service (NCJCS) met to discuss the role Jewish organizations have in the development of Jews of the next generation. Noting a gap between the Jewish identities of children and the pivotal role that parents play between immigrant and native generations, these Jewish communal workers agreed that Jewish institutions and the professionals who staff them have a responsibility to model and transmit positive Jewish values to America's Jewish youth. To fulfill this responsibility, Jewish organizations must adapt rapidly with the times, apply relevant research to their work, and commit themselves to understanding not only the how of their work but also the what and the why.
