Spirituality at B'nai Jeshurun: Reflections of Two Scholars and Three Rabbis

By Steven M. Cohen, Lawrence A. Hoffman

Synagogue 3000, November 2009

In 1998 under the auspices of then Synagogue 2000 and Congregation B'nai Jeshurun itself, Professors Ayala Fader and Mark Kligman undertook a rich and revealing ethnography of this unique Upper West Side New York Congregation. Ten years later, they present their reflections. "The New Jewish Spirituality and Prayer: Take BJ, For Instance," discerns the elements of BJ's synagogue culture in a truly insightful and valuable fashion. This report also includes reflections from S3K co-founder Rabbi Larry Hoffman and S3K Director of Research Professor Steven M. Cohen. These three pieces, compiled into one report, offer an unusual perspective into one of the most intriguing Jewish congregations in North America today.
