The Delicate Balance--Board-Staff Relations

By Gerald B. Bubis, Jack Dauber

Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA), 1999

In this chapter of Board-Staff Relations for the 21st Century, the authors look at certain factors that may impact the relationships of people who are involved in Jewish communal organizations. They look at shared and disparate values, skills, and knowledge as a key area and recommends that efforts be taken to bridge this gap. They look at the issue of role delineation and highlight that trust between executive and lay leaders is important in understanding the differences in roles; they also examine the issue of power and authority and assert that organizations can only function successfully when the potential conflicts are weaker than the power, structure and authority.
