Fact and Opinion

By Samuel Spiegler

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Spring 1970

This article presents in brief a miscellaneous sample of happenings in Jewish communities around the world. These include speculation as to why Jewish husbands disproportionately abandon their families, the creation of a social group for five married couples of "Jewish retardates," an account of a Navy chaplain of his tour of the "Jewish ship," the USS Bronstein, a report about clergy's opposition to a tax on church and synagogue property, and a report on the participation of several New York rabbis in a potentially illegal counseling program for young women seeking abortions. Notes from Israel include the opening of a new university-level school of social work and new figures on average income. As well, a letter to the editor responds to a previous article about the utilization of vocational workers in schools by highlighting the significant differences between social workers and teachers.
