An Introduction: Celebrating the Past, Shaping the Future

By Richard A. Siegel

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Fall 2009

The author outlines this volume of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service, which is dedicated to the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's School of Jewish Communal Service. He announces his appointment as director of that school and shares a change of direction for the program, which is changing its name to the HUC-JIR School of Jewish Nonprofit Management. As well, he announces the formation of the Center for Jewish Communal Leadership, which will elevate the training of Jewish leaders already in the field. The imminent retirement of the baby boomers and the lack of demand for middle-management positions poses a challenge to Jewish public leadership that the field must be prepared for in the years to come.
