Ten Percent of American Jews

By Ira M. Sheskin

Brandeis University Press, 2005

The three-county South Florida area (Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County) is home to 565,000 Jews, representing about 10 percent of American Jews. The South Florida Jewish community has the third-largest concentration of Jews (after New York and southern California) in the country. Twelve percent of the South Florida population as a whole resides in Jewish households, creating a Jewish milieu in many areas of South Florida. Only the New York metropolitan area may have a larger percentage of Jewish households than South Florida. The influence of the Jewish population is felt significantly in the cultural, political, and economic arenas of South Florida.
