The Jewish Population of Maryland

By Geo. E. Barnett

American Jewish Committee (AJC), Jewish Publication Society (JPS), 1903

The author presents the process leading up to an estimate that the Jewish population of Maryland is roughly 26,500. The method used for Baltimore centered on the use of burial records in Jewish cemeteries, taking into account the general white population's death rate, observed differences in Jewish death rates, cause of death, occupation of the deceased, immigration records, and other considerations. Estimates for Jewish populations in Maryland outside Baltimore centered on correspondence with members of known Jewish communities.
