Salary Trends and General Security Problems of the Jewish Social Worker

The author discusses salary and job security as pertains to the field of social work in comparison to other professions, and in the Jewish communal field in comparison to the wider field of social work, basing his conclusions on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and documents from the National Jewish Welfare Board and the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. Social workers in general are highly underpaid, the author explains, and while Jewish communal workers have a higher average salary than social workers as a whole, three explanations account for this: sectarian causes often exert greater appeal in fundraising than nonsectarian causes; the Jewish communal field is disproportionately full of men, while the rest of the social work field skews toward women, and men receive higher salaries in general than do women; and a higher proportion of Jewish communal agencies are unionized than the unionized portion of the field as a whole.
