Israel as "Jewish and Democratic" - Revising the Sacred Formula

By Ilan Peleg

Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA), Spring 2004

The author explores the tension between Israel's identity as a modern democratic state with aspirations of universal values, and as a particularistic Jewish homeland for the Jewish people. He presents and critiques the arguments that it must be either one or the other, and develops his own argument that it is possible for Israel to be a distinctively Jewish liberal democracy with inclusion and equality.
