A Universe of Obligation

By Ruth Messinger

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), January 2006

The author cites the Talmudic teaching that suggests we are accountable for the injustices perpetrated anywhere we could have intervened. In the age of globalization, as our world becomes ever more interconnected, our universe of obligation expands. The author argues we must join today's rural farmers, urban slum dwellers, people living with AIDS, and the victims of war and genocide in solidarity and make a common cause.
