Film Review: Romantico

By Peter L. Stein

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), April 2007

The author describes a documentary film produced, directed, and edited by Mark Becker. In classic direct cinema style, this intimate, tightly focused portrait follows an immigrant from Mexico around San Francisco's Mission District and his sudden return home to Mexico. The portrayal puts a human face on the legions of workers who make up the neighborhood's - and America's - shadow economy. The yearnings expressed are universal in this moving portrait of a new kind of American immigrant archetype.
