Book Review: Understanding the Prophets

By Jill Jacobs

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), October 2005

The author reviews The Hebrew Prophets: Selections Annotated and Explained by Rami Shapiro. This reclamation of the prophets is part of a new breed of Jewish spirituality that emphasizes the exploration of the self as a means of encountering God. She qualifies that Shapiro's emphasis on the self validates a self-indulgent religious mode that can be understood as permission to abdicate responsibility for the well-being of the greater world.
