From I to Thou

By Mordecai Finley

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), October 2006

The author discusses the collective versus the individual in Judaism. He affirms Mark Pearlman's assertion (in this issue of Sh'ma) that we can begin with the I and move to the We, but offers the additional perspective that we must change the We" of Jewish institutions by insisting on Buber's I-Thou ethical relationship.
