The Meaning of Jewish Identity in the Context of Jewish Education

By Charles S. Liebman

Charles S. Liebman, December 11, 2000

I assume we all agree that the problem of strengthening Jewish identity in the Diaspora has fallen upon the shoulders of the school more than on that of any other institution. Whether a conscious effort to shape attitudes toward the Jewish tradition doesn't undercut efforts to impart the substance of the tradition is besides the point. Outside the Orthodox community this is what parents expect from the school and with some notable exception, they tend to be indifferent to the substance of the Jewish education which their children receive.
