Multiculturalism

By Charles S. Liebman

Charles S. Liebman, 1999

The term multiculturalism has assumed emotional overtones and is now loaded with all kinds of political meanings in the United States. I agree with Newt Gingrich that whereas the United States is a multi-ethnic and that by definition means a multi-cultural society, there is such a thing as an American civilization, just as, following Mordechai Kaplan, I believe there is such a thing as a Jewish civilization. Each merits privileged positions among all Americans in the case of American civilization and among all Jews in the case of Jewish civilization. But I also believe that the conception of multiculturalism, interpreted at its best, deserves better than many of its adherents have made of it.
