The globalization of our world, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, catastrophic environmental disasters, and the longest and deepest economic recession since the Great Depression all have caused worldwide trauma and present us with extraordinary challenges. When Ruskay became executive vice president and CEO of UJA-Federation of New York in 1999, who could have predicted a decade of unprecedented events presenting challenges to the fabric of civilization as we had come to know it, coupled with untold opportunities to reshape the world and our environment. Under his leadership, the Jewish communal network in New York, nevertheless, reacted quickly and enhanced its capacity to provide massive services to New York's Jewish community. This is a testament to its crucial place in our community.
