Synagogues for a New Era

By Sidney Schwarz

Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), October 2000

Synagogues must transform themselves to meet the next generation's needs and expectations, the author opines. He identifies and explains three preferences of upcoming generations (inclusivity, empowerment, and engagement) and four characteristics of the synagogue-community which he envisions: articulation of mission; less hierarchical organizational culture; spiritual leadership; and the framing of serious Judaism.
